Terms of Use

These terms cover the HushJournal website and the hosted journal at hushjournal.com. By creating an account or using the journal, you agree to them.

The service

HushJournal is a private journal. You sign in with Google or with a username and password. Your notes are locked on your device before they are saved. We keep the locked copy. We cannot read your notebook names, page titles, or page text.

The journal application is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3. These terms cover use of the hosted service. The license covers the software itself.

Your account

You need an account to keep a journal. Give a username you are allowed to use, or sign in with a Google account that is yours. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details to yourself.

You can delete your account from the app. Deleting it removes your account and the journals stored with it.

We may refuse, pause, or close an account that breaks these terms, or that we need to close to protect the service or other people.

Your journal

You choose a secret that unlocks each journal. That secret stays on your device. We do not receive it, and we cannot reset it.

If you forget that secret, we cannot open your notes or recover them for you. A hint, if you save one, is stored as ordinary text so it can be shown before you unlock.

Journal names are stored as ordinary text. Notebook names, page titles, and page text are stored only in locked form. The date of a page, a journal’s colors, and whether names are masked are stored as ordinary settings, not as part of the locked notes.

You are responsible for what you write. Do not use HushJournal to break the law, to harm someone, or to try to break into the service or other people’s accounts.

The service can change

We may change, pause, or stop HushJournal. We may also change these terms. When we do, we will update the date on this page. If you keep using HushJournal after a change, the new terms apply.

The service is provided as it is. We do not promise that it will always be available, that it will be free of mistakes, or that locked notes will never be lost. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost notes, lost secrets, or other damages from using or being unable to use HushJournal. Nothing here limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit.
